Jona Raasch, Chief Executive Officer
Jona Raasch was appointed President of The Governance Institute, the leading provider of governance knowledge and solutions for the CEOs and directors of hospitals and health systems, in May 2006.
Ms. Raasch has been involved with hospitals and health systems at all levels for the majority of her career. As the Chief Operating Officer for National Research Corporation (NRC), Ms. Raasch spent 22 years helping hospitals and health systems measure and improve the areas of quality, communication, education, and client satisfaction. Additionally, she worked very closely with a panel of industry experts whose focus is to develop and implement initiatives to improve the patient experience.
Ms. Raasch is a member of the National Research Corporation’s advisory board and has served as an advisor to the board of the Picker Scandinavia, Germany, and Switzerland offices.
Zach Griffin, M.B.A., M.H.A., General Manager
Zach Griffin has held leadership positions for over a decade and is currently General Manager for The Governance Institute, a service of National Research Corporation. Zach has been working with healthcare organizations throughout his career with areas of focus including patient experience, patient engagement, improvement strategy, marketing, information technology, services development, leadership, and governance. Zach has also worked for Ernst & Young, 3M, and Thomson Reuters in a variety of strategy, marketing, product development, and leadership roles.
Zach received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Iowa in Mechanical Engineering and later earned a Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA) at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and a Masters degree in Healthcare Administration (MHA) at the University of Washington. Zach and his wife Dana live in Seattle with their two sons and dog.
Charles M. Ewell, Ph.D., Founder
Charles M. Ewell, Ph.D. founded The Governance Institute in 1986 to provide information services to boards of directors and physicians of healthcare organizations. The Governance Institute began with board retreats and in its early years evolved to provide a series of conferences where boards could come together and learn from each other and expert presenters. Under his guidance and leadership, The Governance Institute has grown into what it is today. In addition to The Governance Institute, he was chairman of Global Governance, Inc., his own privately held strategy and investment business.
Dr. Ewell was born and educated in Virginia and has spent most of his career as a teacher, author, and consultant. He published over 60 articles and several books on management and governance strategy and lectured at the University of Wisconsin, Yale University, Ohio State University, and UCLA. He also served on many hospital, civic, and corporate boards, including the Hoover Institution, the “think tank” on the campus of Stanford University.
He worked in hospital management for five years and consulted with the Booz, Allen & Hamilton partnership in Chicago for another five years. For the next 10 years he was with Arthur Young & Company (now Ernst & Young) as a partner and the national director of that company's healthcare work. He also directed the merger that created American Healthcare Systems (now Premier, Inc.), a national alliance of 1,500 hospitals, and served as president during its start-up.
Dr. Ewell passed away on April 16, 2014, at his home in La Jolla, California, after a long battle with cancer.
