E-Learning Courses

Welcome to the Board!

The tools on this page provide important information and helpful tips for every level on the board. Directors bring a specific set of skills and experience to the healthcare organization’s boardroom, and they need to be clear about their fundamental duties, roles, and responsibilities. The following set of E-Learning Courses is intended to provide a basic set of information about your role as a director.

These E-Learning Courses are brief (five to seven minutes long) and can be viewed individually and/or during a board education session or board meeting. Each E-Learning Course has a corresponding Elements of Governance® publication for further reading on each topic.


Courses:

Advocacy
The board must advocate on behalf of the organization and its community. This goes beyond fundraising and philanthropic activities to political issues, labor relations, establishing the organization’s purpose and need in the community, and so forth. Take this course to better understand your role on the board in advocating for your organization.

Management Oversight
As a board member, you have the responsibility to maintain the critical board–CEO relationship. This course provides a basic set of information on your role as it relates to management oversight, including the board’s role in recruiting and selecting a CEO, evaluating CEO performance, and determining the CEO’s compensation and benefits.

Self-Assessment and Development
This course provides a description of your role on the board, as it relates to assessing your board’s performance in the core responsibilities and fiduciary duties, as well as assessing your own performance as a director and using assessment results to take steps as a board to improve performance.

Quality Oversight
The board is ultimately responsible for quality of care and patient safety in the hospital and health system. This course reviews quality issues that should be discussed at the board level and how to ensure that appropriate performance levels are met in this area.

As a director, you have the responsibility of protecting the organization’s financial resources. This course describes details of your responsibility as it relates to financial oversight.

Board Roles & Responsibilities
This course provides an overview of the board roles of policy formulation, decision making, and oversight, and includes overviews of the six core responsibilities of financial oversight, quality oversight, setting strategic direction, self-assessment and development, management oversight, and advocacy.

Fiduciary Duties
The board has a fiduciary mandate—a legal and ethical obligation—to protect the interests of the organization. This course provides a definition of fiduciary and briefly explains the fiduciary duties of care, loyalty, and obedience.
