From Volume to Value: Charting a Course for Surgery

In this session, Dr. Campbell discussed a major paradigm shift taking place in American medicine, and outlined how, using the discipline of general surgery as an example, leaders must recognize and adapt to very rapid change. The proposed changes in the way physicians are paid for their services will be fraught with confusion and acrimony, and will focus on what the most reasonable definition of quality really is, what is paid for in a typical 90 day “episode” payment, and what the resulting definition of “value” will be. It is incumbent on leaders—in this case surgical leaders—to anticipate problems, and to propose solutions.
