Patient Segmentation for Consumer Strategy & Population Health

Patient segmentation is a business term for creating pools of patients based upon shared characteristics that can then be used to implement focused strategies. This is a standard practice in almost all business that has evolved to contain a high degree of sophistication resulting in business tailoring their offerings to better meet their customer’s needs. For a variety of reasons, healthcare has been slower to adopt these practices. Our current practices are very basic and don’t really represent a meaningful way to engage patients. Given the increasing cost shifting from third party payers to consumers, there is going to be an incased pressure for healthcare delivery systems to better understand consumer needs. There have been many new entrants in the market that are serving segments in a unique way and this will put pressure on mainstream delivery systems to match their service offerings. Healthcare systems are going to have to better understand their current and future markets as well as the range of patients that exist in each market and customize their offerings. A foundational concept in population health is segmenting patients and ensuring their needs are being met in an efficient and effective manner. The challenge the industry faces to develop the infrastructure to accurately and reliably operationalize population health is daunting. At every step of the way there are a number of obstacles and we need to develop the competencies to navigate around them. This session will clearly lay out the key issues and present a number of potential solutions for boards and management teams to contemplate.
