How to Sell What Works: Collaboration from a Point of Strength & the Impact on Communications

Unlike the more straightforward hospital transactions of yesterday, today’s healthcare partnerships are more creative, more strategic in nature and take longer to complete. These transactions, though they are less often the result of financial emergency, are vitally important to proactively positioning healthcare organizations for a stronger tomorrow. So, how do healthcare leaders enact radical change needed to position for the future without a burning platform or imminent threat to survival of their hospital? This new era demands a new approach – one that harnesses a deliberate and strategic partnership exploration process in conjunction with a proactive, multifaceted engagement strategy. In addition to rigorously searching for the right strategic partner, health system leaders must also articulate a threat some cannot see, as well as develop a clear and compelling vision for partnership that resonates with their key stakeholders. Then, they must continually sell these audiences on the need to transform and collaborate. The engagement fostered by this approach can often accelerate the pace of needed change and position board members and administrators as the visionary leaders they are.

Driving Value through Strategic Alliances

Effectively delivering high-value care and managing population health require that hospitals and health systems network and partner effectively, not only with their physicians but with providers across the continuum of care, insurers/health plans, companies offering disruptive technologies or care models, community organizations, and/or patients and their families. In this session, we will explore how to identify whether, with whom, and how to forge strategic alliances to drive value – especially when these alliances may involve competitors or industry disruptors. We also will explore how such alliances require new forms of collaborative governance that may cross traditional organizational boundaries.
