Accountable Care Organizations: The Challenge of Setting Strategy amid Uncertainty

Presented by Don Seymour, president, Don Seymour & Associates and Governance Advisor, and John Harris, Principal, DGA Partners

Wednesday, September 22, 2010
11:00am-12:00pm Pacific/2:00-3:00pm Eastern

Accountable care organizations are a significant part of the healthcare reform legislation. Beginning in January 2012, the concept behind ACOs is based on a strong case that integrated care can improve quality while decreasing costs. But the case was made based on the experience of a few, highly organized providers: Kaiser, Geisinger, Mayo, and 31 others. The healthcare landscape of the past 20 years is littered with the detritus of failed attempts to integrate providers. While attempts at greater integration will be in everyone's future, successful organizations will have to clear operational, financial, IT, cultural, and legal hurdles, including how to align with physicians. Those who ignore ACOs may be overtaken by competitors. This Webinar will examine these challenges and others boards will face, and provide advice on setting a clear organizational vision, the timing of major investments in these programs, and setting appropriate risk tolerance.

The following questions, among others, will be covered in this program:

  • Why are ACOs so important?
  • How do ACOs fit with other key strategies?
  • What questions should boards be asking about ACO strategy?

This 60-minute program will include a live question/answer session.

Physician–Hospital Alignment: Successful Strategies and Board Leadership Slides

A Governance Institute Webinar
Physician–Hospital Alignment: Successful Strategies and Board Leadership

Aligning with physicians is now a top priority for hospitals. Rapid strategic change is being driven by dynamic shifts in financial incentives, the competitive marketplace, quality measurement, proposed health reform, lifestyle concerns, and a changing social compact between hospitals and physicians.

Many hospitals see that their relationships with physicians have reached a tipping point. As a result, new models are emerging to successfully align interests. Hospital boards and senior management must have a solid understanding of the challenges and opportunities presented by this evolving strategic issue.

This Webinar:

  • Explores the dynamics that make physician–hospital alignment imperative
  • Identifies the most successful models for physician–hospital alignment—and ways to assess which model(s) is most likely to win your physicians’ support and succeed
  • Explains the board’s role in development of an alignment strategy
  • Describes practical approaches for building communications, trust, and engagement in leadership with and by aligned physicians
