News, Articles, and Updates
Today’s complex healthcare environment is causing a growing trend toward board certification. After attending last year’s Governance Support Conference and reading Intentional Governance: Advancing Boards Beyond the Conventional, Donna DeSisto, assistant to the hospital board of Sarasota Memorial Hospital, began to explore the merits of a board development program. Although board certification is not mandatory in the state of Florida, she felt that it was still important to bring the idea to the board. In this article, DeSisto shares the reasons behind her board’s decision to become certified and the process they set up to fulfill that resolution.
Board members are looking at ways to improve quality and reduce the costs of delivering healthcare services. Several trends, such as changing payment structures and rising costs, are making this cost/quality “value equation” particularly important to healthcare leaders now. The transition from volume-based to value-based methods of payment has already begun and hospitals and health systems are preparing for the new reality of value-based payment. Richard L. Clarke, D.H.A., FHFMA, explores the important role governance support professionals play in helping the board improve the value of healthcare and provides examples of organizations leading the way toward a value-based system.
For our first article in a series highlighting governance support professionals, The Governance Institute interviewed Valerie Huyge from Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare. Huyge has spent 10 years working with the board of directors and its committees keeping them organized, informed, and ready to make tough decisions. In that time, the organization and the board has experienced enormous growth. In this article, we share Huyge’s experience supporting the board through change and her passion for governance support.
