Leaders are facing intense pressure to curb costs and improve quality. Many hospitals and health systems now derive some portion of their revenues from value-based payment systems and leaders continue to search for ways to promote evidence-based, efficient care with a focus on managing the health of populations over time. Given these complexities and calls from outside organizations for boards to become more engaged in quality, senior executives and board members are increasingly looking for guidance on board practices that lead to better performance.
This white paper presents preliminary findings from Governance Institute research on board practices that improve performance on quality measures included in the CMS Value-Based Purchasing program, which adjusts payments to hospitals based on their performance on process, outcome, and patient satisfaction measures. It also provides case studies and perspectives from the leaders of several high-performing hospitals and health systems that employ these and other board practices in their continuous efforts to improve quality of care and governance effectiveness.
