9:00-10:00am General Session
Managing Up/Managing Down: The Art of Wielding Power & Influence Without Authority
Stephen K. Klasko, M.D., M.B.A. & Todd Sagin, M.D., J.D.
Physician executives are frequently faced with significant responsibilities, but given little in the way of resources or formal authority to act on their agenda. This hour will describe the many tools and tactics available to physician leaders seeking to influence others. Drs. Klasko and Sagin will discuss “change management” tactics for physician executives in rapidly evolving organizations.
10:15-11:30am General Session
The Growth of Hospital Employed Physicians: Impact on the Organized Medical Staff
Stephen K. Klasko, M.D., M.B.A. & Todd Sagin, M.D., J.D.
As more traditional medical staffs are becoming hospital employees, physician executives are faced with new challenges. How can tension between private and employed doctors be managed? When are medical staff rights by the terms in the contracts of employed physicians? Is corrective action for employed doctors a medical staff process or an HR process? How does a self-governance structure for employed doctors interact with the medical executive committee? These are a few of the ethical, legal, and practical questions that will be addressed in this session.
11:30am-12:30pm General Session
Developing a Physician Management Infrastructure
Stephen K. Klasko, M.D., M.B.A. & Todd Sagin, M.D., J.D.
In recent years, the traditional CMO and VPMA have been asked to take on increasing responsibilities. Most hospitals and health systems desperately need to create more management infrastructure to oversee the activities of doctors. How should service line medical directors, department chairs, and associate physician executives be organized under the leadership of a CMO or VPMA? What approaches work in small hospitals? How should health systems with multiple hospitals organize medical staffs and physician leadership? This session will provide relevant career planning for physician executives in hospitals of all sizes.
12:30-1:30pm Faculty & Attendee Networking Lunch
